Recently, tests were conducted on the effectiveness of a Combination Lighting
Retrofit for 2' x 4' recessed fluorescent light fixtures. The original fixtures, which had
T12 fluorescent lamps and standard ballasts, were re-built with an engineered
combination of T8 lamps, electronic ballasts, and reflector inserts.

The results were impressive!

•   66% energy consumption reduction
•   66% energy demand reduction
•   95% of the light retained

While the economics will vary with the installation, in office applications this measure
can be expected to yield about a 1.0 - to - 2.5 year payback.

It is possible to significantly reduce the power needed for office lighting. For example, a
Combination Lighting Retrofit is available from McNally Engineers for 2' x 4' recessed fluorescent
light fixtures. For fixtures which have T12 fluorescent lamps and standard ballasts, they may rebuilt
with an engineered combination of high output T8 lamps, electronic ballasts, and highly efficient
95% specular reflector inserts. This measure can qualify for a rebate of up to $34.00/ fixture.
